The Fall of Man

3 November 2010

The Holy Bible shows God as the Source and Creator of heaven and earth and all that is in it. Genesis 1:1 and Psalm 8:3-9 tells of God’s purpose in creating the earth; to provide a dwelling place for the crown of his creation, man. Everything but the fruits of just one tree was at man’s disposal for consumption. Eating of that fruit would result in death, God told man.

Scripture shows that man has some very unique features; being a free moral agent. He has a will and a choice to make in any given situation at any time; Deuteronomy 30:19 , Deuteronomy 11:26. This makes man rational. However, man is also called up to respond to God. Deuteronomy 30:19 says “I call heaven and earth to record this  day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live“. Verse 20; “that thou mayest love the Lord thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him, for he is thy life, and the length of they days…

Each person can choose to be one of God’s covenant-keepers (righteous) or a breaker of His covenants (rebellious). As a result, each individual is held accountable for the choices he makes; Hebrews 9:27
So the devil (the tempter) visits man in the garden of Eden. The devil uses the lust of flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life to tempt man (Gen 3:6, I John 2:15-17). Eve yielded to the temptation (James 1:14). The man chose to follow hi wife and in the process obeyed the devil instead of God; man lost his place as God’s crown of creation and became a servant of the devil. Romans 6:16 says “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?“As a result of this fall,

  • Man lost his righteousness (his right standing before God) Gen 3:22-24, Rom 3:10-12
  • Man lost the nature of God and inherited a sinful nature from the devil. Jn 8:44, Rom 5:12, Rom 7:20
  • Man lost his authority of ruling the earth to Satan
    Job 9:21, Lk 4:5-8, Rom 6:16, II Cor 4:3-4
  • Man and all creation were cursed
    Rom 8:18-23, Gen 3:14-19

Discussion points

  • What is the stand of a newly born baby in the sight of God? Is the baby a sinner?
  • There are some people in society who may be morally better than others who go to church. Will they also be judged as sinners?

So is there hope for mankind? Of course! Read the blog about God’s Plan for Salvation
